Technical Support Frequently Asked Questions

I get a message telling me I need to install a Plug-In. What now?

You are probably using Netscape or Mozilla, possibly on a Mac. If you have Internet Explorer, try going to thepositivemind.com using it, instead of Netscape. If this doesn't work, or you don't have Internet Explorer installed, go to the Windows Media Download Page and grab the latest copy.

If you are using a Mac, make sure you get the Mac version. If you are using Netscape, grab the "Player plugin for Netscape". For Internet Explorer, grab the latest version of the player available for your system (Mac or windows). Close your web browser, run the install program you have just downloaded, cross your fingers, bow to the east and return to thepositivemind.com.

Ok, I've downloaded the latest version of Windows Media Player and I'm still not getting the test movie to play, what can I do?

Make sure you only have one installation of Internet Explorer installed on your machine. Go to Start>Settings>Control Panels>Add/Remove Programs. See if there are 2 or more installations of Internet Explorer. If there are, uninstall the least used/older one(s). Reinstall Windows Media Player.

The player says it's playing but there is no sound.

Be sure you have a sound card installed. Be sure your speakers are turned on and volume on the speakers turned up. Be sure the volume on your computer is turned up. On Windows machines, there is a picture of a speaker (next to the clock) that you can double-click to see your volume controls. If you are using Windows XP, and don't see a speaker, click the blue arrow (<) next to the clock.

I'm on a dialup connection and the audio is stuttering and freezing.

Many times you can simply go off line and redial. The speed of your dialup connection depends on the sound quality on the telephone line. If you often experience poor sound quality on your voice calls, you will not get full bandwidth on your data connections either. This might be the right time to consider a DSL or Cable hookup. Remember it's a business expense!

I don't like Bill Gates and all things Microsoft. I run Linux and refuse to debase my computer with Windows Media Player.

Consider alternate locations. Is there an Internet cafe in your area? Most public libraries have computers with high speed Internet connections available for free. Call and explain what you need to do. Some places will reserve a machine for you on the date and time. Alternately, team up with a friend or colleague and watch together.

A Word about AOL…. America on Line is NOT the Internet, it is a very large, but still private network that you log into. AOL makes every effort to keep you within this private network behind their proxy server where they can entertain you and sell you stuff. While valuable to protect children from evil, and very easy to use, it is not a business-class Internet connection. Because we cannot control how AOL handles our data on their network, we cannot always guarantee a top quality experience

If you are on a corporate network behind a firewall and/or a proxy server you may need to have the IT dept. allow you to pass both video and java applets through the firewall/proxy server. Please have your technician contact us (below) and we will be glad to assist.
